LADY PIRATES CRUISE TO A 73-61 VICTORY OVER HOWARD

Washington, DC – The Hampton University Lady Pirates cruised to a 73-61 win over Howard University in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for both teams here on Saturday, January 6.
Hampton scored 50 points in the paint as it improved to 6-6 on the season. Howard, meanwhile, remained winless on the season at 0-11.
Hampton had three players score in double figures, including senior guard Rachel Butler, who scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, senior guard Artiva Burns, who dropped in 13 points, and freshman forward Quanneisha Perry, who scored 11 points and snatched seven rebounds in the Lady Pirates’ victory. Howard was led by Asha Santee, who scored a game-high 21 points.
Hampton took the tip and the lead in the first half and never looked back. The closest Howard would get was within four points in the second half before Hampton sealed its win. The Lady Pirates grabbed 58 rebounds (24 off. 34 def.), scored 50 points in the paint and scored 20 points off the bench on their way to their sixth win of the season..
“I am very pleased at the team's play in the paint and especially the performance of freshman Quanneisha Perry," said HU head coach Walter Mebane. “We were able to score 50 points in the paint and get 58 rebounds; now that is hard for any team to do, but we did it and I am pleased about that.”
Hampton was led by Burns and Butler who both scored in double figures in the first half alone scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. The Lady Pirates scored 26 points in the paint, 13 points off 15 Lady Bison turnovers.
Senior Stephine James came up big as she scored eight points for the Hampton with six of them coming from beyond the three point are as they record another victory over Howard.
The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, January 12 as they host the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University in another MEAC contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and this match-up with be the first game back in the HU Convocation Center for the Lady Pirates since November 25, 2007.
